Vanishing Point presents three emerging painters of Brooklyn and Mexico. All three artists, each recent graduates of New York art schools, confront similar issues of form and spatial relationship as figurative and formal. In varying mediums of oil, watercolor and pencil on paper three interpretations challenge the vanishing point both formally to viscerally.
Igor Solis, Austin Power, and Caroline Taylor each investigate the concept of the vanishing point. Solis and Taylor confront the idea formally, manipulating color and space with a play of positive and negative, foreground and background. Solis’ paintings flow through many vanishing points, confusing the viewer as to existence or absence of a horizon. Taylor’s paintings present one specific vanishing point, yet no end point, allowing the climax to remain ambiguous. Austin Power approaches the vanishing point in a visceral manner, allowing impressions of a person to create portraiture. Limited figuration creates a question of emerging or vanishing into the distance.
Igor Solis currently resides in Merida, Mexico. Achieving his BFA in Painting from Pratt Institute in 2007, his work has been widely exhibited in Mexico in venues, most recently Central Cultural Autogestivo and the Museum of Merida.
Austin Power is a 2008 graduate of Parsons School of Design, earning a BFA in Fine Arts. He has since been included in exhibitions including Silent Noise, RABBITHOLESTUDIO, Dumbo, Brooklyn, NY; KNCTRNL, curated by Caroline Taylor, Leonard Tourne Gallery New York, 2009; Every Artist Thinks They Make Gold…, Secondhome Projects, Berlin, Germany. Power has a forthcoming solo exhibition at Graphite Gallery in Williamsburg, Brooklyn.
Caroline Taylor earned her BFA from Pratt Institute. She works as both a painter and curator for the Deutsche Bank Collection in New York. Her work has been exhibited in Brooklyn and most recently solo show at The Mill Gallery in Hartford, Connecticut.
